Stef Will
Mixed media artist Stef Will works at the interface of art and science, investigating the unseen and the overlooked. Her interdisciplinary background with a Master’s in Fine Art and a Bachelor’s and Doctorate in Medicine is influencing the work, creating unique perspectives and opportunity for uncovering concepts that may otherwise remain hidden. Subject matters include investigations into visible versus invisible aspects of the self, and the nature of consciousness, as well as the cultural narratives surrounding these. Her evocative works may integrate found medical objects such as surgical blades and syringes, as reminders of the finite nature of the physical body, tempting the viewer to look beyond Newtonian materiality, towards energetic thresholds between the tangible and the intangible. There is also on ongoing engagement with coastal vestiges: from uninhibited oyster valves and derelict gables to shell fragments and found rust shards, all infrastructural remnants and repositories of energetic traces. Another line of enquiry is perception and the nature of truth, inviting the viewer to question the perceived nature of reality in today’s world, and challenging authority as a gatekeeper to the truth. Related to this interest, she has been looking at the subject matter of mass surveillance, examining the algorithmic gaze in relation to power and control.
