This project is the third of a trilogy of themed exhibitions organised by the Creative Network and hosted by Manx National Heritage. The first two projects explored firstly Boundaries, both physical and mental and then secondly notions of Home.
Traces explores the tangible and intangible marks we leave upon the world and those the world leaves upon us.
Members of the Creative Network, a voluntary not for profit collective of about 75 Manx artists, were invited to interpret the word traces through their individual artistic vision, in any way they chose. The works brought together in this resulting exhibition and catalogue, examine how traces – whether physical, emotional, or temporal – shape our
understanding of existence, environment, history, sense belonging and of place.
In an increasingly volatile, ever-changing world, traces surround us – often providing a stabilising thread which enables us to make sense of our lives, our history, our ancestry and our place within an ongoing chronology.
Physical impressions left behind, memories shared across time, marks of existence both physical and ethereal. These traces might be found in footprints in the sand, weathered surfaces, forgotten photographs, or as invisible imprints upon our genetics or emotions within our hearts.
