Greg, as a photographer, has always believed that photography has been viewed as the poor relation of the visual arts. Although appreciation of photography has increased during his lifetime, he still subscribes to the view that the culture of Britain - in comparison to that of the US or Europe - is ambivalent to photography and, as such, for some, photography lies on or beyond the boundary of what is considered to be a truly artistic medium. Far from discouraging Greg, this has always given him momentum to push at the boundaries of what a photograph is, to explore new ways of seeing, and consider that a photograph is not just of something, it is something. Consequently he has developed a passion for abstraction, looking to extract an aesthetic from the unprepossessing, from the unlikely. The photograph he has contributed to this exhibition is an example of this. The image is from a series of photographs of the structure below Ramsey Harbour Swing Bridge. The image was created using single exposure intentional camera movement (ICM). Post-processing was used to intensify the form and colours.
