Pavel Zoubok states: as “culture becomes increasingly hands-off, we as humans have a visceral, primal need for tactility and connection. Artists return to this world where they tear, rip, paste, work with their hands.” This level of engagement, whether it is clay, collage or assemblage, is central to Vici’s practice. The very physicality of this process is itself a metaphor for the effects of the weather on our environment, our plans, us. It is this weather that drives her continuing body of work, “Will There be Sandwiches in Marksies”, to which this collage belongs. The weather has seeped into our very bones. Will the boat sail? Will the planes land? Will the post arrive, indeed will there be sandwiches in Marksies? The sea is a boundary that has repelled invaders for centuries, protecting us from all manner of pestilence. Though no matter how beautiful, it is not always our friend and when its roar engulfs us, and its waves sweep and hurl everything in its path, we turn time and again to our lifeboat crews. This collage is centered around the new Shannon Class Lifeboat RNLI 13-35 destined for Peel. It is collaged from worked and found paper, dry point, watercolour, and pen and ink.
