Activities for Festival Visitors at Grenaby
Natural Reliefs in Plaster
with Rosie Glassey Festival visitors will be invited to have a go at turning impressions of foraged plant life into a wonderful 3D relief made in plaster. This technique can capture amazing detail of the plant and preserve it for posterity. We hope that some visitors creating their own nature based casts will allow us to display their work on the developing Silverburn Art Trail. These mini artworks will be secreted amongst the actual flora for visitors of the Trail to chance upon and admire. So please do pop down to Grenaby on the 5th or 6th and join in the fun. This particular activity has been supported by IOM Arts Council as part of a programme of workshops based around the Art Trail. |
Intaglio Taster Session
with Rosie Wood This is an opportunity to try an Intaglio printing technique. We will be using natural materials, inking them up with oil based inks before putting them though the etching press with dampened paper. This really brings out the details of the found objects producing an embossed effect which you don’t get from other printing methods. People will be able to take their print away. With using oil based inks these sessions are not so suitable for younger children. |
Big Build
with Jo Lewy Jo thought it would be fun to try something a little different for this Festival! Weather permitting, on each of the two days, she will be building an iconic Manx building in clay but she needs your help to build it. Jo is currently putting together a VERY rough cardboard skeleton model which will be totally covered in clay. It will be the fine detailing on the clay that Jo is inviting you to help with. One of the two buildings will be the Old Castletown Police Station. This much loved building was designed by architect Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott and will feature as a part of The Silverburn Art Trail next year (keep an eye on the Silverburn Art Trail page for updated news in coming months). |
Silk Painting
with Debra Tracey Carney
If you have never tried the delicate art of painting on silk (silk painting), now is your chance. Debra will be inviting people to paint a strawberry on a collaborative silk scarf.
The strawberry motif is inspired by Debra's recent research into the local history of the Silverburn area, prior to running workshops (including silk painting) with residents in the Silverdale Care Home. The strawberry featured large around Rushen Abbey, where they were grown and made into jam for the famous Tea Dances held at Rushen Abbey in the mid 20th Century.
All Debra's research and her practical work with the Silverdale Care Home residents, will culminate in a new sculpture designed by Debra for the Silverdale Art Trail. This sculpture will be located near the Care Home and some of the residents' work will feature within it.

Lots to get involved with on a visit to Grenaby. Our advice is to come wearing your best creative head but perhaps not your best Sunday clothes!
We hope to see you there
