Alex King
As a postgraduate student studying ecology, it is Alex's enjoyment and love of Manx ecology and culture that drives her work for her art business, Fiddler Crab Crafts. Beginning in 2018 as an outlet to make and sell handmade felt trinkets and gifts, Alex has developed and grown her skills and product variety over time. She mostly creates digital art to produce stationery, pin badges, and greetings cards, and designs and makes earrings in polymer clay. Alex also occasionally still picks up a needle and thread to produce key-rings and wall hangings from felt. Her artistic style is bold, simple, and colourful, and she enjoys incorporating textured and varied brushes when working digitally. Alex enjoys the challenge of manipulating her style depending on product type, using a characterised, rounder, and ‘friendlier’ approach for pin badges and jewellery, and a more illustrative take for greetings cards and other items. The goal of her work is to increase awareness of the species that we have on the Island; to engage and educate on these species; to include elements of Manx culture and language - and to bring joy. Some of her work features non-native or pet species, as these animals are associated with the island, She also tries to raise the profile of the lesser-known or less-loved plants and animals on our doorstep. www.etsy.com/shop/FiddlerCrabCrafts |
