Aos-si - Ceramic houses
Since 2018, Kate Jerry and Colette Gambell (together Aos-si) have been passionately creating clay works centred around the theme of Home. Their house collections have featured decorative ceramic wall pieces and art, which have evolved from initial 2-D artworks into stunning 3-D sculptures. Each piece is meticulously crafted with unique decorative finishes, employing a variety of techniques including sgraffito, underglaze and slip, impressing, printing, carving, glaze and lustre decoration. Taking inspiration from the natural world, their Island home and the Celtic mythology that inspires their namesake, the humble house motif has been immortalised through a series of mini sculptures forming
an installation.
Each ‘home’ is lovingly formed and decorated with character, a hint of the magic associated with their Celtic roots and represents the profound understanding that one’s an integral part of, rather than separate from, the land one inhabits.
According to Celtic mythology, elements of nature possess their own spirit and presence. Mountains, rocks, trees, rivers, and all things of the land and sea are believed to hold a mystical essence. Rivers and streams often serve as a boundary between this world and the Otherworld.
The concept of an otherworldly or mystical island home, is the starting point of all work. Striving to infuse a sense of magical beauty into each piece they create. In this particular collection, shapes of houses have been utilised as an allegory for this enchanting theme.
Each house is created by hand or crafted from a hand made mould. The clay is usually sourced from reclaimed clay, studio off-cuts and scrap that are reformed into new works.
