Gavin Carter
Born and brought up in NE England, Gavin Carter’s early career was in molecular biology, working for a time with a biotech business in Milton Keynes. A desire to work in an outdoor environment and practical skills in tree management prompted a change of direction, enabling him to set up his own tree surgery business and follow his interests in woodland conservation and art. Gavin soon developed more sculptural elements in his work, bringing out the character and ‘figure’ of the wood with his knowledge. His inspiration has come from the landscape and the natural forms found within. His favourite raw material is oak, but he has worked with many different types of woods, enhancing texture by deliberately leaving chisel, chain saw or axe marks on his pieces. Other materials are sometimes introduced into the work and scorching and wire brushing wood are often used to bring out patterns in the grain. |
