Isle Contemporary, Tynwald Mills
Isle Contemporary (formerly known as the Isle Gallery) This popular gallery at Tynwald Mills is staging an exhibition of work by Creative Network artist, Graham Rider throughout the festival (and beyond). Graham is a relative newcomer to Manx shores but through his paintings he makes it obvious that he is already ‘at one’ with the Manx landscape and particularly with coastal scenes. In 2011 a pop up exhibition space began at Tynwald Mills (in what had been the Courtyard Gallery). In subsequent years the creative activity has diversified. Since 2012, a broad range of workshops have been staged through Artreach Studios and more recently the development of an online Artists’ Agency, promoting the work of local artists in a world market. To bring together the various strands of practice, an umbrella name of Isle Contemporary has been adopted. |
The Isle Contemporary is situated on the first floor of the building on your left as you enter The Courtyard at Tynwald Mills. The Mills complex is well signposted from St Johns.
Opening hours Tuesday - Saturday 1 - 5 & Sunday 2 -5. The current exhibition showing is Creative Network Member Graham Rider's 'Hinterland' which will run until the 12th May
The paintings in this exhibition explore the Coastline in all its contrasts, the character of the sea around the island and its rugged coastline. Rain coming in off Niarbyl, waves crashing in, the mists and the changes of colour from grey to blue to emerald. The beautiful green of the Irish Sea, clean and crisp throwing up stones and seaweed. Graham is fascinated by the patterns created by the ebb and flow of the water just as much as the scarification of the hills by the running of surface water. Graham explains, ‘I build associations with memories and feelings inspired by the landscape and especially in these hinterlands between land and sea.' |
