Robert Jones
Robert Jones (b. 1971) is a Manx sculptor working in the Isle of Man. He has had solo exhibitions in the UK and Isle of Man, his work has been exhibited widely and he has pieces in the Isle of Arts Council collection and the Manx Museum’s national collection. Growing up with an artistic background Jones has been inspired by the strong heritage of Manx sculpture, particularly through the work of his mentor Michael Sandle RA and of Bryan Kneale RA. Jones has trained in stone sculpture and a wide range of metalwork techniques. He currently specialises in steel sculpture but also works in paper, wood and other materials. The nature, landscapes and fishing and agricultural heritage of the Isle of Man and their juxtaposition have also inspired Jones. Recent work has been heavily influenced by the climate and ecological crises. Wherever possible his work is made from discarded metal and other recycled materials and he works to minimise his environmental impact. Rob’s latest exhibition and an interview with Rob and his mentor Michael Sandle was featured on the BBC Climate Change website: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-isle-of-man-67744080 Crucible finished in January 2024 but his new show will open at the Erin Arts Centre in February 2024. Rob is passionate about making sculpture more accessible and working with schools to encourage an interest in sculpture from an early age. He has pieces on display in Manx schools and has worked as sculptor in residence at St Birinus School in Oxfordshire. www.sculptors.org.uk/artists/robert-jones |
