Susie Heckles
Susie was born and brought up in Cheshire, but has actually spent most of her life on the Isle of Man. She has a large Manx family on her father’s side, going back for centuries and is lucky to be able to draw upon her Manx roots for much creative inspiration. Naturally an imaginative person, Susie has been drawn towards art and design since she was young. She cannot resist a creative challenge and is at her happiest when free to be working with words, music, acrylics, watercolour or trying a totally new medium. Susie lives in the picturesque village of Glen Maye, the home of many potters and artists. She started working in clay a few years ago, attending several local pottery courses. From there she ended up with a studio in her garden and a kiln in her garage. Directly influenced by Manx culture, nature and the countryside; Susie particularly enjoys working with clay. She finds there to be a very organic synergy between potter, nature and the environment, which she hopes can be seen in her work. Preferring to hand build and enjoying experimenting with texture, colour and form, Susie finds that clay allows her creative process and self-expression to constantly progress. She gets an idea, then spend many hours working on it in her studio; sometimes her ideas work, sometimes they do not, but she finds creating to be a fun, ever-evolving journey. Susie initiated the first, highly successful Manx Potters Fair on the Island and her work is available in local galleries, shops, art and ceramic fairs and at Manx National Heritage. |
