This work was originally made as a therapeutic response to grief. After my Father died, I found vivid memories of him would flood my mind suddenly and envelop me like a murmuration before passing. I think it is fascinating how art can speak to us differently as time and life evolves and we see things from fresh perspectives. This past year we have all been so concerned with the distance between us preventing us from seeing and touching those we love. Yet keeping our distance has enabled us to protect one another. The aerial sculptures of a murmuration are feasible only because of the respective distance kept between each individual bird, enabling them to move as one fluid body. Collaboration in nature can be very effective. We have gleaned much from the natural world recently - not least that we should all remember to respect each other’s space. When lit from the side, the shadows cast by these feathers give a sense of movement while the pins demonstrate restriction.
