After returning to the island in a mad panic and transitioning into lockdown in March 2020, the artist finished the last few months of her Undergraduate degree in her mother’s studio. She felt lucky to have luxuries such as a space to escape the reality of a distorted world and immerse herself in her artwork. At this point, making art became more than an activity. Making art for the artist was now a release, a sense of freedom, a distraction. From the 28th March 2020, the artist wrote a piece of art each day, reflecting on that day in lockdown. The boundaries were the edges of the paper representing the home; the same space to work in everyday, no change, no escape…. but within that? The possibilities were endless. The home space often shifted; living rooms became meeting rooms, kitchens became studios, bedrooms became social hang-outs. The boundary remained, but the space within that constantly changed. This piece of art lies somewhere in between the realms of poetry and creative writing. The words fell onto the page as they came to the front of the mind, automatically, without order, without a second thought. They exist at present to one another, and can be read in any order. The scattered and chaotic nature of presentation enforces this. The simplicity of an A4 sheet of paper implies vulnerability, please treat with care, much like her thoughts on the page. Each tiny space was the artist’s release, an honest representation of her experience of lockdown.
