Jo lewy - home
While the word ‘home’ is massively thought-provoking and can conjure up a myriad of intense and diverse definitions, each one individual and personal to each and every one of us but for Jo, ‘Home’ has condensed itself into the feelings and sentiments attached to the everyday mundanity of place, family and sense of belonging.
The pot that has resulted is a piece that she hopes will become an heirloom for future generations of family, something that will always have a place in one of their homes. The pot is approximately one metre tall and encompasses narratives carved into the clay, together with highly decorative montages of all the places and people close to her heart and ornate hangings of famous ‘Home’ quotes throughout history. It also includes images of family and many small and unique items that she has made in her past. These items that have been hidden away in boxes for many years have, through the making of this pot also found their ‘Home’. The pot is crowned by the beautiful ancient Manx Cottage from which she works and which she feels wraps its walls around her, evoking feelings of its history and the countless people who have also lived and worked there.
For Jo, the subject of ‘Home’ has made her realise what a wonderful place that can be.
