Debra Tracey-Carney - Lost your Key?
We talk so often of losing our keys but what does it feel like to truly ‘lose’ the key to your home? Homelessness is on the increase, whether through displacement due to war, mental ill health, bad luck or simply being born in the wrong place with no resources. The current state of the environment and economics are contributing to a crisis and more and more people are at risk or are fearful of losing their home; on a local and global level. Much rhetoric is espoused around the support for homelessness and this is where the cardboard key comes into play.
Stereotypically, those without a home are viewed as living in ‘cardboard boxes’ and this key is as effective as a cardboard box in providing shelter, warmth or safety. The roof tile was found from an old Manx building (taken with permission) and poses a background of irony.
The mirror, essential to the piece, is old and much used and the piece is designed to include the viewer
as part of the art work. The piece is a statement about the fact that anyone could be in a position of homelessness.
There is so much more that could be said but Debra would rather the viewer was left with their own opportunities for reflection.
Medium: cardboard, string, used Manx roof slate, vintage mirror
Dimensions: 53 x 83 cm
