Graham Hall - the firestorm
The firestorm screamed, furious, untamed,
Consuming past and futures, all voices
Razed, tormented ghosts dance enflamed,
Escape or stand, dark, no time, stark choices

Graham is drawn to simple rustic furniture, especially that made by country-dwellers, often from found materials. There are some fine examples on the Isle of Man as well as the West coast of Ireland and the Scottish Islands. Simple handmade items have provided basic personal comforts: a stool, a stick chair, a hewn bowl, a rough table, a rag rug, all of them precious in poor and difficult times and all contribute to the sense of home.
Homes can seem so permanent yet can become so transient and the lives and futures of their occupants, so solid and secure, can disappear in moments. Graham is minded of ordinary homes subjected to wildfire or violence, a drone attack, a mob, or simply an accident or natural disaster.
Such stories pepper our news, though realities and the suffering seldom seem to register with us as we watch from a distance and relative safety.
This piece aims to provoke thoughts on this.
Medium: wood, mixed media
Dimensions: life size furniture
